Reading Monsters of Ohio
Monday 2 November 2026 22:15 CSTFrom John Scalzi's blog:
MOO (as it rather delightfully initializes down to) has gotten great reviews, including starred reviews in Bookpage, Kirkus and Library Journal, which makes me happy. It’s also a Library Reads Hall of Fame pick, which also delights me.
Monsters of Ohio takes place, as the title suggests, in Ohio — but more than that, it takes place where I live, in the fictional town of Richland, located in the very real Darke County. Lots of elements of the book are taken from or inspired by my immediate surroundings, and in many ways this is the most personal novel I’ve written, and certainly the novel closest to me in a geographical sense. Now, it also has monsters and exploding things, so there’s that too. There’s a lot going on here.
