US Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) died suddenly last night of what some reports suggest was a heart attack:
Graham, a leading GOP foreign policy voice, was running for reelection this year. He had been a staunch ally of President Donald Trump on most matters but had broken with him on some issues, such as calling for a more hawkish foreign policy.
In its statement early Sunday, Graham’s office said only that the senator had “passed away from a brief and sudden illness.” The statement said Graham’s family appreciates prayers and asks for privacy.
Graham’s death narrows Republicans’ majority in the Senate, where they had held a 53-47 edge. Under South Carolina law, the state’s Republican governor can make an immediate appointment to fill Graham’s seat for the remainder of his term, which expires in January.
Graham's Democratic opponent in the November election is Annie Andrews, who as of June 22nd was polling 45-48 against Graham, remarkably close for such a conservative state. With the race now up for grabs and no clear process for nominating a replacement, South Carolina is now much more likely to flip.
Let's also not forget that Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has not been seen in public for four weeks following a medical emergency at his house.
I guess they really couldn't bear to be apart. It's going to be so sad when we find out McConnell drank a sleeping potion, and if Graham had just waited another few seconds before drinking the poison...
